Syncrude Aurora’s first production train opened in July 2000.NACG’s role in this project included all initial site dewatering, clearing, timber salvage, mine development (18 million cubic meters of material), tailings dyke construction (7 million cubic meters of material), plant site rough and final grading, access road construction and piling. All work was completed in a green field environment working as a team with the owner’s representatives. Site dewatering included a 2 million cubic meter ditching program followed by an exhaustive pumping program in which over 30 million cubic meters of water was pumped from the property to the neighboring Muskeg River. All water was required to meet environmental regulations. Work was completed well ahead of schedule and 15% under budget. The Alliance partnership included the owner (Syncrude), design engineers (AMEC), and the 6 major contractors including NACG. The Alliance worked as a team from feasibility in Calgary through final commissioning at site.
