Grande Cache Coal Corporation’s (GCCC) coal leases cover over 22,000 hectares of the Smoky River Coalfield located in west-central Alberta, within the inner foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The mine is located approximately 20 kilometres north of the town of Grande Cache, and 360 kilometres west of Edmonton. Metallurgical coal has been produced in the Grande Cache area since 1969.

North American Construction Group (NACG) was contracted to build 8 kilometres of road as well as develop a portal site for underground mining. Work at the Smoky River Mine included drilling blasting, loading and hauling of waste material (9 million bank cubic metres (BCM) per year), and loading and hauling coal (1.2 million tons per year). NACG also provided road maintenance for over 40 kilometres of haul road and plant support with coal blade dozers and loaders.
